The Problem of Abuse
Over half of women and almost 1 in 3 men experience sexual violence involving physical contact at some point in their lives.1
1 in 7 children experiences child abuse or neglect each year.2
About 90% of sexual crimes against children are perpetrated by someone known to the child.3
Tragically, true rates of abuse are likely higher than statistics show because abuse so often goes unreported. Out of every 1,000 incidents of sexual abuse, only 25 abusers ever face incarceration.4
Church congregations are not immune to these statistics. As Christians we should be on the frontlines of preventing and responding to this abuse, but church leaders are often overwhelmed by the scope of the problem and are unsure where to begin with implementing safety measures to protect the vulnerable in their congregations.
